The solution

The team followed an intense risk assessment process to understand the differences in hazards between:

  • Replacing a pipe in a trench
  • UV curing to extend the life of a pipe

The risk assessment showed that typically, the lining of pipes has a lower risk than installing pipes in trenches.

A two-fold solution was reached, in which curing by UV light was used to extend larger pipes, whilst smaller pipes were replaced with new pipes in trenches.

£m

The process resulted in a £21 million saving to the client.

By using this alternative method, the team were able to incorporate the following benefits

Confined space entry and lifting operations eliminated

Less traffic management operations required

Work near overhead power cables reduced

Manual handling prevented through use of laser cutting operations
