Foreword

Councillor Carl Jackson

Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate Change & Waste

"For many years, groundwater flooding was the ‘forgotten flood’, receiving less attention than other types of flooding. As a result, some communities are still waiting for solutions to prevent the damage groundwater flooding can cause."

"I was greatly encouraged, therefore, to see the progress and contribution that Project Groundwater has made this year towards improving this situation.

Through the project’s ongoing research, we continue to learn more about where groundwater is found, how it behaves, and how it can be mapped and monitored. We are finding out more about communities’ experiences of groundwater flooding, what resilience means to them, and how this can be measured.

This understanding, and the ongoing insight communities provide, has been in sharp focus over the past year as Project Groundwater enters its implementation phase. Feedback from communities has informed the project’s research and driven the development of solutions which will help people achieve resilience against groundwater flooding.

Collaboration and co-creation of solutions with communities, other authorities, projects and organisations, remain guiding principles for the project. Against this background, I have been delighted to see progress towards the establishment of a national organisation, ‘Let’s Talk Groundwater Flooding’. This will bring people together, share learning, and deliver the necessary focus on groundwater flooding through, and beyond, the lifetime of this project.”
