Flood Warnings
The flood warnings workstream aims to develop a web-based flood warning application to provide communities with information about the local groundwater flood risk, a local communication channel for responding to groundwater flooding and community groundwater flood action plans.
An initial review of the approaches and considerations of developing a flood warning service was undertaken during 2021 and 2022, including consideration of currently available flood warning services and forecasting approaches. Based on the findings and recommendations of this review, the development of the web-based application commenced in 2023.
This integrated flood warning service will be informed by the outputs from the Groundwater Monitoring and Groundwater Modelling and Mapping workstreams. Groundwater level forecasts will identify when groundwater levels could rise near to the ground surface and have the potential to impact buildings, transport, sewers, agricultural land and people’s lives.
It is proposed that the web application will provide a dashboard showing active alerts in the local area, display live data of groundwater levels and historical level statistics, and hazard maps showing the forecast level of flood risk. Through the web-application, community members will be alerted to increasing flood risk and to take the relevant actions from community flood plans.
The web-based application is being developed in partnership with the focus communities, with engagement activities including a community surveys to understand the requirements of the application, and focus groups to test and feedback on the prototypes.
We will also be engaging with the communities to identify alternative community communication methods and to develop the groundwater flood action plans, identifying the realistic actions that could be taken in advance and in response to a flood warning, along with the format and content action plans.
